EDITORS' RATINGS OVERALL SCORE:

Overall

RATING

It's better-looking and more comfortable than its predecessor, but there's nothing unique enough about the Yaris to recommend it over its numerous — and often cheaper — competitors

DETAILED EDITORS' RATINGS

Dynamics

RATING

Average power for the class. Transmissions work well and are geared to take advantage of avaiable engine power without sacrificing mileage. Handling is about what you would expect for the segment with little road feel and considerable roll.

Comfort

RATING

Soaks up most bumps in the road without much fuss or cabin noise. Wind and road noise is moderate. Front seats are comfortable even for taller drivers while rear seats are about average.

Function

RATING

Poorly placed cupholders and a lack of easily accessible storage space are the biggest functional problems in the Yaris. Control layout is relatively easy although higher trim models sacrifice style for ease of use.

Design/Build Quality

RATING

Hardly what we would call an attractive design on the outside, but it's less offensive than the Echo it replaces. Interior gets some points for attempting to inject unique design elements into a budget priced car, but it often results in reduced functionality.

DETAILED PROFILE:

Economical Transportation Low price combined with solid build quality makes this a good choice for those on a budget.

Fuel Efficient Economical engine will deliver over 30 mpg no matter how you drive it.

Daily Commuter Small size makes it easy to park. Lousy cupholders reduce its commuter friendliness, but it an otherwise comfortable compact.
