On October 7th, 2009, I experienced a very similar situation to what Richard described. In my case, my 2007 Matrix lost engine and steering power in the middle of the freeway while I was on my way to work. Thank God I was only traveling 40 or so miles per hour because of traffic; if I had been traveling faster, I have no doubt this incident could have resulted in injuries ... Read More...

Whatever you decide to do, contact Toyota and file a report. I think I did this on the phone. Check their website online to find a place to start. I've since sold my 2006 Matrix back to the dealer and purchased a 2009 (at zero per cent interest). Just picked up a 2009 Toyota Matrix. BASE model 1.8L Cruise Control All weather package Power package MSRP Sticker was $19450. Total was $15,900 after rebate + TTL. Red 2009 Matrix AWD, 30,000 KM, one year old. Car had a deflector installed prior to delivery. Lots of paint chips on the hood, just behind the deflector. Chips on front fenders and doors. these are down to metal. These are not in a spot likely to be rock chips and are definitely not door dings. There does not seem to be a clear coat.
