EDITORS' RATINGS OVERALL SCORE:

Overall

RATING

An excellent overall package, the Toyota Highlander is comfortable and easy to drive, with expandable cargo space to handle everyday family needs.

DETAILED EDITORS' RATINGS

Dynamics

RATING

Handling and steering are sound, but not sporty. Engine performance and fuel economy are slightly above the class average. A 4-cylinder version is available.

Comfort

RATING

Occupants will find the seats comfortable and the ride smooth and quiet.

Function

RATING

Versions without the navigation system have excellent ergonomics and control logic. Opting for the navigation system doesn't spoil the audio controls, and only minimally impacts the HVAC system. A third-row seat is available, but is tight for adults and eats up all of the cargo space when in use.

Design/Build Quality

RATING

At best, Highlander styling can be characterized as "conservative." It has an inviting interior design, however, but beware the excessive use of too-shiny fake wood that mars some trim levels.
