09 Cobalt LT1

I drove out in an LT1 coupe for a little over 17k tags, title and tax. The car listed for around $18,600 as I recall. I bought it from Bender Chevrolet in Clovis NM. It is our local Cadillac/Chevrolet dealer and I service my 03 Cadillac DeVille there. Nice people. This was during the employee price sale. I understand that the present rebates are about as good. I probably should have ordered one. I would not have bothered with the remote start or the spoiler but would have ordered the Pioneer stereo. Bender ordered a group of 09 LT1s with the spoiler, floor mats, side moldings, and leather steering wheel with cruise, automatic, 2.2 engine, remote start, and Bluetooth. . Mine is Victory Red with the Ebony interior. . I like the XM radio and will subscribe. I have no interest in On Star. I had it for 5 years on the Cadillac and never pushed the button. I don't like a bunch of strangers knowing where my car is and how to open it. I just use it in town anyway and carry a cell phone.
Re: Extended Warranty [jfritsch]

When I bought my 09 Cobalt in September to take advantage of the Employee discount the finance guy tried to sell me a third party warranty. He "didn't know" what the price of the GM Protection Plan was. Anyone who purchases a third party warranty is not very bright in my opinion. Companies can go out of business and holders of a warranty have to get permission for a warranty repair. With a GMPP any Chevy dealer will handle it and I don't expect GM to go under anytime soon. I probably won't bother with one. I only drive about 10k a year on the Cobalt -just around town.

If you credit is good and you plan on financing the best deal is the 0.0 financing for 60 months. That is basically a free loan for 5 years. Forget about the $2000 incentive. Interest rates from banks or credit unions are between 5.5 and 6.5% with good credit. With a $30,000 loan at 6% for 5 years you will spend $4,799.04 in interest on the loan. A lot more than you saved with the $2000 incentive. As for negotiating a price at the dealer, I would not pay more than invoice. There is a $440 Factory to Dealer incentive on most Silverado’s and I would make them give you every penny of it. The sales person may not be aware of the incentive but the sales manager definitely knows so don’t get to rude with the sales person just yet. If they act dumb, print this out and take it with you. http://www.edmunds.com/new/2008/chevrolet/silverado1500/100911251/incentives.htm- - - l?vdp=off&setzip=78759&state=TX Update: Just noticed the Factory to Dealer incentive is only available to residents of the following: LA/OK/TX/Select Counties in AR/KS/MS/MO/NM. Truck and SUV sales are way down and the purpose of the incentive is to stimulate sales. Also, on the invoice you will see LAM Dealer and LAM Group contribution. That isn’t a contribution in your favor and is just a junk advertising fee to give the dealer more profit. Some dealers will drop it if you push hard enough and others won’t. With truck sales down you have pretty good chance of getting them to do it. Give them the price you will pay and stick with it. They will try every trick to get you to budge. Tell them that if they want to sell you a car, that’s the price. If they say no deal, give them a business card or a piece of paper with you phone number and tell them you are going up the road to XYZ dealership and if they change their mind to give you a call. Also make sure you specify when you give them the price that it is $XX,XXX plus TT&L. Otherwise they will try and add other fees to the price. Good luck. Donnie
Re: Buying an '02 LS [gms22 #48]
by dispencer1 on Fri May 21 18:18:04 PDT 2004
Hertz is selling '03 Malibu LS's for $9795 and I'm sure that you can find an '03 elsewhere for around 9k. It will be a year newer with most likely less than 30k mileage. If the '02 is a private owner's car and you know the owner and are sure that maintenance was done I'd consider it for less than 9k but 8-9k is no real bargain for a two year old Malibu.
Surveys
by dispencer1 on Sun Apr 11 08:35:57 PDT 2004
I supppose that positive surveys help a dealer get incentives from GM down the road. If you put anything negative in it you will get a call from the dealer. I wouldn't submit any surveys through the dealer if I were you. I had a doctor once who used to send out letters soliciting bids on a particular car he wanted - this was in a big city where there were a number of competing dealerships all selling the same make. He got his bids back and the one that was lowest sold him the car. He knew the "invoice" price out of the books so he could tell if he was getting a decent deal. I wonder if that would still work. It sounds reasonable.
Camry vs Malibu
by dispencer1 on Fri Apr 09 07:26:09 PDT 2004
I will probably get a Solara - Malibu just looks like a normal rental car -nothing to write home about, but I'll get a Solara 4. The Toyota Camry/Solara 6, unlike the Malibu 6 requires premium fuel and gas milage on the highway is 29 instead of 33. People who compare Camry and Malibu should take the premium fuel requirement into consideration with the price of gas nowadays.
