The Aspen can be equipped with a strong engine, but handling, steering and braking are no better than average for a truck-based SUV. Car-based SUVs handle and steer better, but then they don't have the towing capacity and off-road ground clearance of the Aspen.
Drivers and passengers alike will find the cabin comfortable and spacious, except for second-row legroom, which is lacking. Ride comfort is hampered by the solid rear axle and by body motions that bound excessively over segmented roads and bridges. The third row seat is most well-suited to kids and small adults.
Aspen's interior is logically laid out and for the most part, easy to use. HVAC and audio controls are straightforward, with the latter enhanced by excellent available steering controls hidden on the back of the spokes. There is a lot of cargo room with all of the seats folded, but they don't quite go flat and the resulting load floor is not contiguous.
The Aspen looks quite handsome outside, in a traditional SUV sort of way. Inside, we found good build quality and interior materials. Gaps, panel fitment and the feel of the controls are adequate.
Towing Capable
A strong 5.7-liter optional engine, a maximum tow rating of 8,950 lbs. and a well-integrated tow hitch make the Aspen a capable choice.
Cargo Hauler
With 102 cubic feet of maximum cargo space, the Aspen can swallow a lot of gear.
Family Friendly
Depending on equipment, the Aspen can seat up to eight people, although the third-row seat is best suited for kids and small adults.
